KLINIKEN
SCHMIEDER
Kliniken Schmieder was founded by Professor Friedrich
Schmieder in 1950. Initially a very small private clinic of some
20 beds. In 1952, a department for brain-injured war wounded was added

of brain damage.
A
team of approx. 60 Doctors, including specialists within the fields of
Neurology, Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, General Medicine, Neurosurgery,

STEPS IN NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION
Kliniken Schmieder was founded in 1950 by Professor Friedrich Schmieder.

Stuttgart
The neurological
Fach- und Rehabilitationskrankenhaus has 812 beds at its
disposal and is located at Gailingen (founded 1950), Allensbach (founded
1974) and Konstanz (founded 1992). Out patient facilities are also
available
for 50 patients at the Stuttgart Klinik (founded 1995). Together this
provides a close network of facilities within all the varying fields of
Neurology. It includes: Dept. of Acute Neurology, Early Rehabilitation,
Dept. for severely head injured patients, AHB (Anschlu8heilbehand-
lung: immediate transfer from acute hospital to the rehabilitation-
hospital), General rehabilitation, Neuro-Orthopaedics, Psychotherapy,
Vocational Therapy, Geriatric Rehabilitation, out patient facilities for
local patients and follow up.

Gailingen
It is therefore
possible for patients to move from one stage of treatment to
the next without delay and thus maintain a continuity of rehabilitation.

Allensbach
Admission is arranged
through the Sozialleistungstriiger (all health
insurances) or a local doctor.

Constance
In order for patients
to be admitted their rehabilitation potential is
considered, they are medically assessed and cost provision assured.
Our hospital has
Versorgungsvertriige (contracts) with health insurances
according to § 109 and §11 1 SGB V. Through all Sozialleistungstriiger
admission is possible and there is a standard cost for every care
package.
Kliniken Schmieder
works closely with the Neurologisches
Rehabilitationszentrum Jugendwerk Gailingen e. V.. This is a
rehabilitation
clinic for children and young adults and includes a state registered
hospital
school.
Address: Jugendwerk
Gailingen e.V., Kapellenstr. 31, D-78262 Gailingen.

DECADES OF EXPERIENCE
Kliniken Schmieder were
founded by Prof. Dr. med. habil. Friedrich
Schmieder. Initially only a small private clinic it comprised of 20 beds
in the
former "Naturheilsanatorium Schloss Rheinburg"
in Gailingen. In 1952 a
department for brain-injured war wounded was added and as a result the
main emphasis of care soon became the treatment of brain damage. At the
same time the previous division of care into differing nursing groups
was
abolished. Due to the increasing amount of brain injury after road
traffic and
work related accidents, also vascular illness, the " Kuranstalt Dr.
Schmieder"
continued to expand.
In 1957 the clinic was
restructured into a more specialized unit. Separate
houses, adapted to the demand of more severely disabled patients were
built
in Gailingen from 1960 and in Allensbachfum 1974. Towards the 1960's
and beginning of the 1970's the "Jugendwerk" (Junior
Rehabilitation Unit)
in Gailingen was planned and built with the help and direction of Prof.
Schmieder.
Prof. Schmieder was a
pioneer in terms of setting up a facility for the
rehabilitation of brain injured war victims in the Federal Republic of
Germany. At a time when attitudes were negative towards patients with
multiple injuries i.e. with a combination of physical, mental and
personality
problems, he clearly and positively asserted and demonstrated his
concept of
therapeutic potential following traumatic brain damage.
He closely studied and
followed the work and teaching of Kleist and
Goldstein in the prewar period, and showed, that not only can physical,
but
also mental/spiritual capability, be increased with systematic and
determined training.
From the very
beginning, an essential part of this treatment and training
concept, was the classification of the social and job-orientated
situation, as
well as the examining and training (vocational) of the remaining job-
orientated knowledge and skills in special workshops.
Prof. Schmieder ran the
clinic together with the support of an experienced
staff until his death in 1988. Today the work continues in the same
spirit as
that set by its founder. |
