Some background as to why this Appeal Fund is in place .. We have lived in Southampton for over 20 years, on Sunday morning 20 August 2000, at around 1100 a.m., Wayne who has always been passionate about motorbikes, decided to go out for a ride on his motorbike. Unfortunately, Wayne was involved in a terrible accident that morning. Wayne suffered horrendous injuries, lost masses of blood and virtually died at the scene. He was taken to Salisbury A&E by helicopter, where it was established that Wayne had suffered severe brain damage. His right leg was so badly injured, that it had to be amputated. He had a broken collar bone, and cracked bones to his right temple. Wayne was in a coma for 3 months. Coming out of coma, Wayne could do nothing for himself, he could not communicate, could not speak, could not swallow, and therefore could not eat. He had a breathing tube fitted in his throat and a feeding tube in his stomach. Using what strength he has left, and the advantage that he is living at home, with his partner Tracy and their three boys, Wayne is fighting his way back. He is re-learning all the basic skills, such as eating, drinking, and speaking. Memory problems get in the way of his recovery and the whole process is painfully slow. There is a special clinic (Schmeider clinic) located in southern Germany, which was documented on a ‘Tonight with Trevor Macdonald’ programme. They specialise in the treatment of brain damage patients. The work being done by this clinic is unique, their methods are revolutionary. Nothing in this country comes close to what they are doing for brain damaged people. The clinic is Wayne’s only hope!! We need to raise £25,000 to send Wayne to the clinic for treatment which could give him a chance of a better life!!
